The Group Motion Company observes and expresses the human experience through movement.

Inspired by universal sources, each dance becomes a world of its own - transforming the stage into a ritual space to explore life's mysteries and journeys.

The dances are often layered with distinctive combinations of video, text, soundscape, visual art, and original music. The result is a richly textured, image-filled evocation of the theme or "story." And whether the dance is abstract or theatrical, humorous or thoughtful, the effect is always direct communication between the dancers and the audience - always inviting a response.

The Dancers and The Dance
The Group Motion Company is a professional ensemble, offering a full season of performance and regularly touring their work nationally and internationally.

The Group Motion dancers, choreographers in their own right, are chosen for their technical and creative excellence. They collaborate to create new work under the artistic direction of Manfred Fischbeck, who provides the ideas, choreographic framework, and direction.

The dances evolve from improvisational and compositional structures, developed by Group Motion. The unique process of creation inspires and deepens the connection and understanding of the dancers - and empowers the performances.

The Group Motion Company is also known for its compelling collaborations with distinguished national and international artists in all fields, including set and lighting design, sculpture and painting, poetry, media, and new technologies, such as interactive sound.

The Group Motion Vision
For Group Motion, dance is a language - accessible and vital to everyone. The organization has thus evolved a four-part program to promote this vision:
  • The Company of Performing Artists.
  • The Presenting Series. Two annual programs, The Spiel Uhr (Play Clock) Series and The Visiting Artists Festival, present the work of emerging and established local, national, and international performing artists.
  • Workshops. The Group Motion Workshop invites all members of the public to explore dance through improvisation, whether at regularly weekly sessions or annual week-long retreats.
  • Kumquat Dance Center. In 1996, Group Motion initiated and co-founded the Kumquat Dance Center, a cooperative, artist-driven alliance of contemporary dance companies, who share performance programs, performance and rehearsal space, and operational resources.
